Peasant to Ruler
Created by Dave Eyerly
OBJECT
Become the Ruler by getting rid of all your cards before anyone else.
SETUP
Deal all cards out one at a time, clockwise. In the first round everyone keeps the cards dealt to them, and the player to the dealer's left starts. Play continues clockwise.
PLAY
The first player chooses any number of matching cards to play. For instance, a single 2, or two 2’s, or three 2’s, etc. Play cards face up. The first player leads with any single card, or any set of cards of equal rank. For example one 8, or three 4’s, etc. Each player in turn then plays a card or set of cards that beats the previous play (higher numbered card/s, or larger set of cards), or passes if they cannot play or don’t want to play.
Any higher single card can beat a single card of lower value. A set of cards can beat a single card and can only be beaten by a set of cards with a higher value or a larger set. For example, if the previous player played two 7’s, the next player can beat it with two 8’s or higher, or with three 2’s, etc.
If you choose to pass, you are excluded from playing again until the next trick is started by the winner of the trick you passed on. Play continues until everyone passes. Remove the trick once everyone has passed and the winner of the trick begins the next trick.
The first player to run out of cards becomes the Ruler. The second becomes the Vice Ruler. Everyone else is equal until you get to the second to last person who becomes Vice Peasant, and last becomes Peasant.
On round 2 (once the Rulers and Peasants have been determined), the Ruler trades 2 cards of their choice with the Peasant. The Vice Ruler trades 1 card with the Vice Peasant. The Rulers may trade any cards they choose. Peasants must trade the highest cards they have been dealt.
Play can continue for as long as you like. Each player should sit in order of rank. Ruler in the best seat, with vice ruler to the left, and so on. The Peasant should end up seated to the Rulers right. The Peasant is the dealer.
2+ players, ages 4+
Notes
If you have lots of players, simply add additional decks of Peasant to Ruler. 1 deck supports about 5 players.
